The trick itself is ridiculously simple. (Srivastava would later teach it to his 8-year-old daughter.) Each ticket contained eight tic-tac-toe boards, and each space on those boards—72 in all—contained an exposed number from 1 to 39. As a result, some of these numbers were repeated multiple times. Perhaps the number 17 was repeated three times, and the number 38 was repeated twice. And a few numbers appeared only once on the entire card. Srivastava’s startling insight was that he could separate the winning tickets from the losing tickets by looking at the number of times each of the digits occurred on the tic-tac-toe boards. In other words, he didn’t look at the ticket as a sequence of 72 random digits. Instead, he categorized each number according to its frequency, counting how many times a given number showed up on a given ticket. “The numbers themselves couldn’t have been more meaningless,” he says. “But whether or not they were repeated told me nearly everything I needed to know.” Srivastava was looking for singletons, numbers that appear only a single time on the visible tic-tac-toe boards. He realized that the singletons were almost always repeated under the latex coating. If three singletons appeared in a row on one of the eight boards, that ticket was probably a winner.

Husband of National Lottery winner Annette Rooke says his wife still tries to share her luck with all the family.
Terry Rooke told getreading his wife buys Lucky Dip tickets to post to family members in every birthday card she sends.
Mrs Rooke, from Calcot, won £2.4 million in the National Lottery four years ago.
Last week she and her husband, both 61, were at a party of the region’s biggest lottery winners in East Grinstead in the run-up to the record-breaking £166 million Euromillions draw.
Mr Rooke said they still bought lottery tickets each week, although “nowadays we are more clued up and buy them online”.
He said when they won the lottery he had been thinking about retirement from his job as a prison warder.
“We were preparing to retire and winning the money made everything so much easier,” he said.
“It changed our lives for the better.”
The cash has allowed the couple to help their adult son and daughter.
It also allows them to have “lovely holidays” of the kind that previously they could only dream of.
The main difference is that when the couple take one of their “lovely holidays” they can afford to travel first class wherever they go.
“It has really helped to make life easier for us,” Mr Rooke said.
“We don’t lead a life of luxury all the time.
“I still clean the car myself, like I always did.”
More than 2,500 lottery winners across the UK have joined the Millionaire’s Club.
At the party in East Grinstead, the 20 winners from the South East had won a total exceeding £56m.
Research by Dr Richard Tunney from the University of Nottingham has found that winning the jackpot on the National Lottery is more like learning to ride a bike or having a grandchild than buying a dream car or getting married.
Having drawn his findings from 131 jackpot winners, he concluded that the effects of winning the lottery provide long-term happiness – like riding a bike or giving up smoking – whereas the happy effects of getting married, buying a dream car or having cosmetic surgery wear off and happiness slips to previous levels.

Woman who already had won $52,000 a year for life can add more than $300,000 to those winnings.

Norma Chavez, 60, came forward this week to claim $317,529 in Sunday’s Fantasy 5 drawing. She used the same combination of “lucky numbers” in October 2007 to win $52,000 a year for life playing Win for Life.

Chavez, a retired dry cleaning staffer, used her birthday and the birthdays of two friends to come up with this week’s winning numbers – 3-5-9-10-28. The ticket was sold at the Amoco Food Stop at 2077 N. Decatur Road.

Chavez plans to use the money to buy a dishwasher. “I’ve been careful with my money,” she told lottery officials.

Chavez’s family has also benefited from the HOPE scholarship funded by the lottery tickets she has purchased over the years. One of her two adult children attended the University of Georgia on the HOPE.

After casino blowout, couple win $41M jackpot

TORONTO - When Loretta DeMizio returned home broke from a trip to the Syracuse casino in New York last week, the customs officer at the border jokingly told her to check her Lotto 6/49 tickets, since the winning stub was purchased in her hometown of Niagara Falls.
When she got home, she urged her husband Carmen to check their tickets. He'd get around to it, he answered. Then they both forgot about it.
On Sunday, after church, he grabbed his usual newspaper and coffee after church, then remembered to check his ticket at the corner store.
When Carmen realized he won $41.3 million, he did the only reasonable thing he could.
He washed his car.
Demizio and his wife Loretta, both 61-year-old retired teachers from Niagara Falls, wanted to remain as calm as they could until they confirmed the winning Lotto 6/49 ticket.
"Now that we have the money in our hands, it's real," Loretta said at the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. prize centre Tuesday. "Of course money is going to change our lives, but our goal is for it not to change our personalities."
Carmen purchased the ticket on Wednesday but didn't verify it until Sunday when he walked into a convenience store to check the numbers.
When the huge prize flashed before his eyes, he quietly took the ticket back to his car and drove home.
"I put the ticket on the fridge and went back to the store to get a printout of the winning numbers and put that on the fridge and went outside and washed my car," he said.
But it wasn't until Loretta checked the ticket when the calmness broke.
"I was screaming like a maniac," she smiled.
Their three children came to dinner for a family meeting and they all thought the big news was a terminal illness.
Instead, Carmen cracked open the red wine.
"I told my son, 'Do your happy dance,'" he said.
The Demizios have played the same numbers over a span of 20 years, inspired by New York Yankees player Reggie Jackson, Carmen's brother's football team numbers and birthday dates.
So it's fitting the family now plans on using some of that money to do a U.S. baseball tour, as well as a trip to Tuscany, Italy.
"We want to travel up the west coast, Los Angeles, San Francisco and then we're going to do Boston," said Loretta.
"We love baseball," she said. "We watch nothing else on TV. But, our family is our first priority.
"We have a large family with seven siblings, 15 nieces and nephews and three kids," Loretta said. "We'll use it to pay for their education and education loans."
Carmen also plans to fix up his MG car, which he's owned since 1972. The motor died and it's in need of new life.
"I need to restore it," he said. "That is number one on the bucket list."

EuroMillions winners' 161,653,000 smackers

The couple, who have two grown-up children, scooped the £161,653,000 jackpot in Tuesday's EuroMillions draw.
The huge windfall catapults them to number 430 on Britain's rich list - just behind Posh and Becks.
Dad-of-two Colin, who becomes a pensioner next birthday, was so ecstatic he jokingly vowed to copy Goldenballs Becks and toast his fortune with a new BABY.
Asked how he felt being as rich as the Beckhams, the 64-year-old laughed and said: "We are going to try for another kid."
But wife Chris, 55, had other ideas - insisting: "It's too late for that!"
Colin revealed he had not slept a wink since the couple realised they had won this week's jackpot - Europe's biggest lottery prize.

The payout, which makes them richer than ex-Beatle Ringo Starr, is a huge boost to the pair, who have battled ill health for years.

Colin gave up his career as a Scottish Television cameraman - during which he filmed Sir Cliff Richard and actor Robert Redford - to care for Chris when she fell seriously ill in the early 1990s.

He eventually nursed her back to health and she resumed work - only for him to develop arthritis.

Colin said: "We've had a difficult time. I had to take a significant responsibility to do everything in the house to let Chris recuperate."

The couple missed Tuesday night's EuroMillions draw as they were watching their favourite TV show CSI.

But Chris checked the numbers on their bedroom telly at midnight - and re- checked them FOUR times before alerting her hubby.
She said: "I didn't have anything much on the first four lines, but when I got the fifth one, my last, I found I was ringing every number. I kept going back over them. Then I went to the stairs and said to Colin, 'I need you to check something for me'. He could tell by my voice something was up."

Colin said: "I had to check it three or four times as well because I couldn't believe it. The odds are incredible, it's a stupendous prize."
Chris added: "The Lotto phone line had closed so we just sat up. We were so full of adrenalin we couldn't sleep. We just sat there and talked about how amazing this was.
"We were tickled pink at the whole notion of the win. It got to about 4am and dawn was breaking. We still couldn't sleep so we opened a bottle of wine - and I don't even drink! That's how excited we were.

"We woke up Tuesday and everything was normal. By Wednesday morning, everything was different.
"But we're not afraid of this money, it's going to be fantastic - it's going to be such fun."
Colin revealed he had not let the winning ticket out of his sight since learning of the mega win.
He said: "We held it in our hands all night long on Tuesday and it has never left my side since." The pair now plan to buy homes for son Jamie, 22, and 24-year-old daughter Carly, a photography student.

They also plan driving lessons for them both and reckon Jamie will quit his job at a call centre.

The couple also aim to start their own charity and want to travel the world with Cambodia and Thailand on their wishlist - along with Australia, where Colin has long dreamt of visiting mystical Ayers Rock.
He said: "We want to take our time because it's such a large sum of money. We want to think about how we can do some good with it. There are things we are passionate about, but for as many people to benefit as possible we need to do it in a proper way."

Chris said: "We are not flashy people. We are not celebrities. We need to look at what is the best way to do the most good."

She added: "We need to think about our family and make sure the children are well provided for.

"Neither of them drive because they couldn't afford cars - so driving lessons will be a priority. As for a new house for us, we love the town where we live, but might look at buying a second home."

The couple had a jokey spat on the subject of replacing their cars - a six-year-old Suzuki Ignis and a three-year-old Suzuki SX4. Colin said: "I don't think we will immediately swap cars, if you've got reliable cars what's the point?"

But Chris insisted she WILL splash out on a swish new motor - admitting her dream car is a Lexus Prius Hybrid. She added: "Our future really is bright and golden."

Chris worked for the NHS as a nurse and nursing manager for 37 years before retiring in 2009 due to ill health. She has degrees in psychology and the effects of ageing and describes her illness as "rare and weird neurological problems".

The pair, who will earn £14,400 interest a DAY, live 30 miles from Scotland's other big winner.

Post worker Angela Kelly, of East Kilbride, scooped £35.4million in 2007.

A neighbour of the Weirs said: "They're good people and it's lovely to see something like this happen to someone who deserves it."

TUESDAY'S EuroMillions jackpot will be £18m after no one picked last night's numbers: 6, 26, 33, 34 and 39. Lucky Stars 3 and 4.

LOTTERY winner Ged Blairs has scooped a £2.4 million jackpot, after choosing his numbers in the same way for the past 17 years.
The 49-year-old lorry driver, pictured, has bought tickets with numbers based on his birthday, his sister's birthday, his lucky number 33 and his age since the lottery began in 1994.

His biggest win had only been around £100 when four of his numbers came up around 14 years ago.
But his method finally paid off on Saturday to the tune of £2,405,435.
Now Ged, of Chesterton, has already quit life on the road to take early retirement.
The former JCB worker, who had been doing agency work for Best Connection, in Hanley, told The Sentinel: "Earlier this week I said I couldn't work as I had something on. I have told them now that I won't be back."

The Stoke City season ticket holder did not find out he was a millionaire until Sunday afternoon, because he was hungover from a night out drinking with pals.
Ged has been playing the lottery online for the last five years and buys two lines every Saturday and Wednesday.

He said: "I received an email saying there was important news about my lottery account, but I disregarded it as I thought it was just a £10 win."
He later opened the email to find out he had won £2.4 million.
He rang his sister, Pauline Clewes, aged 53, of Waterhayes, straight away to tell her the news.
He said: "I was shaking like a leaf – I couldn't believe it. And Pauline's been the same as me. She can't eat and can't sleep, but she is absolutely over the moon.
"I have felt ill since I won. I'm not sure if it was the hangover or nerves, but it's starting to sink in now and I feel great."

Ged plans to spend some of his winnings on holidays to Thailand and Las Vegas, a Jaguar car, and hiring a box at the Britannia Stadium on Boxing Day for family.
He said: "Everyone has a wish list and I'll be able to tick quite a few things off mine like going to Vegas, having a nice car and going to the gym to lose a few pounds.
"I have never had this kind of freedom before. I'm an ordinary working class guy, a miner's son and I can't see me being any different now I've got this money."
His lucky numbers were 1 and 21, based on his January 21 birthday; 2 and 24, from Pauline's February 24 birthday; his lucky number 33 and his age – 49.
Trentham couple John and Jackie Livesley, who won £2.6 million in November 2008, offered some words of advice to Mr Blairs.
Jackie said: ""He should sit down, think about it and take some good financial advice. Most of all, just enjoy it and be careful."

Washington couple celebrate £2.4m lottery win

PENSIONER Doreen Smith found 2.4 million reasons to celebrate her birthday.
The great-grandmother of five and her husband Fred discovered they had won a share of the National Lottery jackpot in the early hours of Sunday – just as she turned 71.

And despite suffering from mobility problems due to two hip and one knee replacements Mrs Smith managed to dance with joy upon seeing the six numbers on the couple’s ticket were an exact match for the numbers which had been drawn just hours earlier as part of Saturday’s main Lotto.

The lottery win topped off a weekend of celebration as one of the couple’s grandsons, who they have decided not to name, was married on the Saturday.

Mrs Smith, who is actually called Elizabeth but prefers to go by her middle name, said: “The win was a third reason to celebrate. We had been out on Saturday at the wedding, it was my birthday and then we won the lottery.”

The couple, from Washington, have played the same numbers since the lottery started in 1994. Mr Smith, 71, said: “The numbers are all birthdays of family members. I’ll still keeping putting them on despite us winning. Imagine if they came out again and we didn’t have a ticket. I’d kick myself.”

The couple went public with their win yesterday at Lumley Castle in Chester-le-Street surrounded by close family. Mr Smith, who spent most of his working life in the Royal and Merchant Navy, recounted the moment he realised he had scooped a share of the £7,216,305 jackpot.

He said: “I put the Teletext on and started to check the numbers.
“I thought I had won a tenner at first then realised I had more than three numbers. We had been to the wedding and I was a little bit tipsy. I couldn’t quite get the 49 in focus so I asked my son, who was staying with us, to check. It was then he told me we had all six numbers.”

Top lottery winners raise a glass !

AS if they haven’t had enough luck already, even the sun shone yesterday as Scotland’s biggest lottery winners gathered for an exclusive al fresco party outside an upmarket Glasgow hotel.

Miniature cupcakes with pink icing were served as champagne bottles were popped – with one rogue cork flying through the air and landing at the feet of the assembled photographers.

As a three-piece band played in the background, the big winners gathered to help the National Lottery celebrate £1 billion paid out to Scottish winners since it all began in 1994.

As the millionaires posed for pictures, three winners each held up a giant number 2, to mark the 222 millionaire lottery winners created north of the Border.

Among the winners at the event at the five-star Blythswood Hotel were Kerry and Tony Robinson from Greenock who had a baby boy in March.

Ms Robinson won just over £2.5 million in January 2007 – before she met her future husband whom she waited a year before telling she was a lottery millionaire.

He recalled how she broke the news by putting on a DVD of her holding a big cheque: “It was a bit of a shock but it was a good moment. I got checked out first.”

Ms Robinson still sounded giddy talking about her big win yesterday, recalling how she initially thought she had only five numbers when she went to the local supermarket to claim her winnings.

She said: “I told my friend at the shop I’d won and she didn’t believe me. But she pulled it up on the computer and said ‘You’ve won.’ And I said, ‘I know’. And she said, ‘No, you’ve really won.’ Then she went this colour of grey and I realised she was serious. It was a bit of a blur after that.”

Her win has opened doors and future plans include “more fun” and investing in their children’s future. The pair dabble in property and have a long-term plan.

A couple well versed in spending their winnings is Tommy and Margaret Webb, below, also from Greenock, who won £1.7m.

Eleven years on from their big win, Mr Webb, a former maintenance engineer at a hospital, joked they are now “skint” but, of course, the reality is different. Life is “excellent” he said with lots of holidays, charity work and time spent helping look after their granddaughter Poppi.

Being able to look after family is the “best and most important part of winning,” said the couple, who go to the bingo and still play the lottery each week.

“Since the beginning of the year, we’ve won about £12,000 at the bingo,” said Mr Webb.

But life has not been all positive since their win. “I worked for three months after the win,” said Mr Webb. “But those three months weren’t very nice. People change – the people I worked with for over 20 years.”

Yesterday’s line-up also included the most recent winners, Alistair and Isobel Cameron from Wick who won £500,000 on March 5 – just three days after Mrs Cameron’s birthday – having played the lucky dip since the lottery started.

Mr Cameron, a train driver, said he has no plans to retire and the couple have yet to spend much of their winnings – although they have paid off their house and bought new cars.

Lottery winners celebrate the good times - and sad - of hitting the jackpot

What do you give a group of Lottery winners worth £25 million? A party to celebrate.And a fireman, IT engineer, former chef, a pub clearner who refused to share her winnings with her children and the man who blew his £2.8 million prize on fast living, got just that in Bath and North East Somerset.

Winners from across the West got together to tell of the good times, and sad, as research revealed Lottery jackpot success was akin to a grandparent being presented with a first grandchild on the happiness scale.

One Somerset couple have found it hard to adjust with Denise Hardware missing her bakery job "terribly" and her 55-year-old husband Paul struggling to adapt to the slower pace of life.

Mr and Mrs Hardware won £4.9 million in 2007 and not surprisingly quit their jobs.
“They did say I could have stayed at work part-time and I wish I had because the people I worked with were amazing,” Mrs Hardware said.

“I even missed getting up at 4am every morning. I still do the odd wedding cake and birthday cake.”
Pub chef Paul always checked the lottery numbers before work on Sunday morning. On the day he realised he and his wife had won the jackpot he still went in to work but asked for the next day off to pick up his winnings.

But for a Dorset couple, Ed and Michelle Edwards from Sherborne, winning £1.9 million was the opportunity they craved to give something back to the community.
Mr Edwards, went part-time as an IT consultant for the Avon and Somerset Probation Trust and his wife quit her job as a shop manager and became an unpaid dog trainer for the charity Canine Partners, who provide specially-trained dogs for disabled people.
The couple have bought a new home, yacht and took some friends on holiday.
“I don’t feel like it is my money so I don’t mind spending it on other people,” Mrs Edwards said.
“If I had earned it the hard way it might be different.”
“It’s burned in your memory, I will never forget it,” said Ed.

“Having spoken to a few of the other winners, it’s funny because very few absolutely jump for joy, everybody remains calm but of course it changes your life. Those first few days are actually like a bereavement but in a good way, because you realise your life is never going to be the same again.”

Diane Collins shared a glass of Pimm’s at the party yesterday and declared her type of win – she scooped £40,000 a year for life on a scratchcard in May this year – was better.
“I think it’s better because it’s nice and measured and you can’t go mad,” said the 45-year-old who runs the jewellers Weston Gold Exchange in Weston-super-Mare.
“I’ve invested a lot of it in gold, obviously, and we’re putting dormer windows in the bungalow. It’s nice with things like birthdays – two of my three children have them this month – and you can afford to do what they want to do without worrying about it,” she added.

Bristol man wins with Cash 5 ticket

BRISTOL — A jackpot-winning Cash 5 ticket valued at nearly $345,000 was sold Saturday at Bristol's Selecto Supermarket on Pond Street, the Pennsylvania Lottery said Monday.

As of Monday afternoon no one had claimed the winnings, lottery officials said. But Maribel Maldonado, office manager at the supermarket, said one of Selecto's regular customers was the lucky guy.

"I think he's still shocked," she said. "He said he couldn't sleep the night he saw the numbers."

Maldonado said she didn't know the man's name. But she said his lucky numbers — 12, 16, 22, 29 and 40 — were picked by computer.

The man paid $1 for the ticket. The odds of winning the jackpot were one in 962,598, according to the Pennsylvania Lottery. After taxes, he'll take home more than $258,000.

Search is on for mystery lottery winner

LOTTERY players in Elmbridge have been urged to double check their tickets after a £90,660 prize went unclaimed.

The ticket was bought in the borough for the draw on May 28 this year.

The winning numbers on that date were 2, 3, 17, 23, 40, 43, and the bonus ball was 31.

The ticket holder, who matched five numbers and the bonus ball, has until November 24 to claim their prize.

A National Lottery spokesman said: “We’re desperate to find this mystery ticket-holder and unite them with their winnings. This amazing prize could really make a huge difference to somebody’s life.

"We’re urging everyone to check their old tickets again or look anywhere a missing ticket could be hiding.

"Try checking in the pockets of clothing, in wallets, bags and down the back of the sofa. Someone out there could literally be sitting on a fortune.

"We have the champagne on ice and our fingers crossed that the lucky winner comes forward to claim their win."

If no-one comes forward with the winning ticket before the prize claim deadline, then the prize money, plus all the interest it has generated, will go to the Lottery's Good Causes funding pot.

Lucky break gives balikbayan winning lotto ticket

MANILA, Philippines - A 60-year-old Balikbayan almost didn't get the winning ticket that would land him the biggest cash prize in Philippine lotto history.

According to Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office chair Margie Juico, the balikbayan was on vacation with relatives in Subic when they thought of buying lotto tickets at the Royal Duty Free Mall.

"Sabi niya ito ang pangalawang beses niya na tumaya sa 6/55 tapos itong pangalawa nanalo siya. Parang katuwaan nilang mga magkakapatid at pinsan na tataya sila (He said it was his second time to bet on 6/55. For fun, he and his siblings and cousins played the lotto)," she said.

While waiting in line, a woman suddenly cut in front of the Balikbayan and bought a ticket at the lotto counter. The woman also chose a lucky pick 6-number combination or a number that is randomly generated by computer.

"Ang sabi niya, Naku! Kung naghintay lang ang babae sana siya na ang nanalo (He said, if the woman had only waited she would have won the lotto jackpot)," Juico said.

The PCSO chief said the balikbayan also chose to get a luck pick combination that would win him the P741 million 6/55 Grand Lotto jackpot. She said the winner is planning to return to New York, where his family has been staying for the past several years, and then return to the Philippines and retire.

Juico said the balikbayan was wearing a white T-shirt, rubber shoes and long pants when he claimed the P741 million check with his relatives at the PCSO head office in Quezon City on Thursday afternoon.

Juico said that based on their conversation, she concluded that the man is a very religious person.

The holder of the "lucky pick" 6-number combination was in a religious pilgrimage and was praying before the Kamay Ni Hesus Shrine in Lucban, Quezon when he received a call from his relatives, telling him that he might have won the Grand Lotto jackpot.

Returning from the religious pilgrimage, the balikbayan's wife eagerly asked him to check if he really won the lotto jackpot that was being sought by millions of Filipinos.

Juico said that according to the man, he asked his wife if he could just check the next morning because he was very tired and really needed to go to bed.

The next morning, the man compared his ticket with the winning combination published in a newspaper and confirmed that he had won the largest jackpot ever won in the Philippines.

Juico said that the old man did not have immediate plans on what to do with the money. She said that the old man mentioned his "apo" (grandchild) and may save some of the prize money for the child's future.

A former hairdresser told told how a £2.5 million lottery win has allowed her to buy everything - except love.
Single Andrea Holmes, 34, has splashed out on luxury cars, holidays and a plush property portfolio since winning the lottery nine years ago.
Andrea quit her job as a hairdresser, opened her own beauty spa and can buy anything she likes when she goes shopping.

But despite all the trappings of wealth Andrea is still unlucky in love and desperately hoping to meet the man of her dreams and start a family.
Andrea, who has invested the majority of her win and original savings for her future family and home in Wiltshire, says she had never found the right man.

She said: 'I was single at the time and my status is still the same. Maybe I'm too fussy, but I was quite independent then and I still am now.
'The money can be an issue for some, but I still live the same way as I did before. I would like to settle down at some point.
'I believe that it will happen at some point and it will come up when it does but it has not so far. I'm very busy and I have not been actively looking for love.

'I would really like a family of my own one day as well so I have been trying to make the money last.
'I want to be able to do things for my children and give them a better life than I had.
'My parents tried their hardest for me but you always want to give your children better than you had yourself.'

Andrea - who says her win had 'never sunk in' - bought her usual three lines of lottery tickets and a special Lucky Dip to cheer herself up in June 2002.
The former hairdresser moved out of the ex-council house she lived in with her parents and bought a sprawling four-bedroom property nearby in Wiltshire
She was previously 'over the moon' when she won £80 two years after starting to play the lottery just after her 16th birthday.

Andrea always handed over her tickets to mum Sandra Holmes, 60, who kept them safe and checked her numbers for her on the television.
It was Sandra who spotted the numbers on Andrea's Lucky Dip as they were announced and then had the task of persuading her daughter that she was a millionaire.
Andrea said: 'Mum shouted upstairs to me that I had won the lottery and we're quite a jokey family so I just assumed she was playing a practical joke.

'To be quite honest, I think the win has never really sunk it. It is just such a life changing amount of money.
'I would have been delighted to have won £10, I was chuffed when I won £80 but £2.5 million is just too much to take in.'

Trading up: Andrea swapped her clapped out Ford Fiesta for a Mercedes SL 350

Andrea did not touch her win for a few weeks - and says her bank even phoned her to tell her that she could use the account.
After that, she traded her clapped out Ford Fiesta in for a brand new Peugeot 206, which she traded in for a BMW convertible two years later.
After three years she traded her BMW in for a Mercedes SL 350 and now owns a Mercedes SLK, which she bought four years ago.

Andrea took her parents, Sandra and dad Bill, 63, on a cruise to the Canary Islands, after her win, and gave a chunk of the winnings to her brothers and sister.
She has also taken her friends and family to on holidays to exotic locations such as Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Amsterdam and Norway.
Despite her wealth, Andrea still shops on the high street and regularly picks up tops in New Look and Debenhams - although admits she can buy anything she likes.

The former hairdresser moved out of the ex-council house she lived in with her parents, both former pizza factory workers, and bought a sprawling four-bedroom property nearby.
She now lives there alone with her six-year-old Border Collie 'Troy' and eight-year-old African Grey parrot 'Red'.
Andrea purchased a portfolio of properties around Devizes two years ago and acts as a landlady for a number of tenants across the town.

She has started renting out a room in a local beauty parlour in Devizes, where she employs a beautician who offers 'fish spa' treatments.
Amazingly, Andrea still plays the lottery every week and spends her money wisely.
She said: 'It's amazing how the lottery has changed my life. It has given me much more confidence.
'But I am careful with money too. If you spend it wisely and look after it then it will look after you.
'I felt a bit bad when I started playing the lottery again as I had been so lucky but then nobody seemed to mind.
'It's really nice to go back into the shop where I bought my winning ticket and buy more.'

Chapel Hill man wins $1M in N.C. Lottery

RALEIGH -- Rich Wright of Chapel Hill started his day Thursday like he does many days, checking his lottery numbers as he sat with his family around the breakfast table. He always plays his set of lucky numbers – special birthdays – and had purchased 10 chances at the $200 million jackpot the night before.

As he matched his tickets to the winning numbers on the N.C. Education Lottery’s website, he saw that one of his tickets had matched all the white balls, getting five of the six numbers.

“I knew I had power played so I knew it was a million dollars,” Wright said a few hours later at NCEL headquarters. “I couldn’t believe it. I said, ‘Oh, my God.’ And my family said, ‘What?’ And I said, ‘We just hit the lottery.’”

Wright, a sales manager for a company that sells and installs central vacuum systems, said he always buys the $2 Power Play tickets because he knows if he wins the prize will be bigger. Under the Power Play option, matching the numbers of five white balls results in an automatic $1 million win, while wins from other lower tier prizes are multiplied by the Power Play number.

Wright said he planned to use his prize money, $680,000 after taxes were withheld, to pay off bills, buy a new home, and take his family, including his two daughters, to Disney World. He bought the winning ticket at the Buy & Go on Northwest Ephesus Church Road in Chapel Hill.

Last week saw the 15th anniversary of the National Lottery – which has created 2,300 millionaires since the first draw on November 19 1994 – and surprising new evidence that some numbers are much luckier than others.

Statisticians may be puzzled – but superstitious people will not be – to learn that the number 13 has won less often than any other number.

Our table shows how frequently each number has appeared in the main Saturday and Wednesday Lotto draws to date. The number that has been drawn the most times over the past 15 years is ball number 38. This has been drawn a total of 256 times – 209 as the main ball and 47 times as the bonus ball.

Number 25 is the second luckiest ball to date. So far, it has been drawn a total of 235 times, 196 times as the main ball and 39 times as the bonus ball. Other lucky balls are number 31, number 23 and number nine, which have been drawn 235, 234 and 228 times in total respectively.

Eight is the luckiest number of all – because it sounds like the Chinese word for prosperity. There was once a man in a village, which was extremely mischievous. Everybody felt sorry for him. And indeed, he had no house, no wife and no kids. Nobody wanted him to work even as a servant!

His kind neighbours asked the wise man for help for the poor fellow. Surprisingly enough, though, the wise man said that some of the good we do to others is not making any change for them at all. He also added that there is something inside of us that makes us live the life we have. Kind people did not believe him, so he decided to prove it to them.

Half a year passed. The wise man asked the village to collect a golden coin from every house for the poor fellow without letting him know anything about it. So they did. In the middle of the village there was a bridge so crooked, that when you stand on one end of it you cannot see the other one. The wise man put a bag full of golden coins right behind the middle of the bridge and asked the poor fellow to cross it. The whole village was watching him.

When he crossed, the wise man enquired him, what did he see on the way. The poor fellow replied: “I saw nothing”. Everybody started steering at him. “I thought to myself “, he explained, “that crossing the bridge is quite easy, I cross it every other day. Therefore I crossed it with my eyes closed”.

The unflinching faith in "lucky" numbers can be found everywhere: From gift money given on birthdays and red packets distributed every Spring Festival (in sets of two for a stronger effect), to the apartment, floor and even street numbers where people live, to the amount of "thank you" money paid by the groom to his fiancee's bridesmaids on their wedding day.

Traditionally, the upper class in Hong Kong spend huge amounts of money at auctions for precious "lucky" registration numbers for their cars. Held regularly since they were first introduced in 1973, these licence plate sales draw huge crowds, including the city's rich and famous, who want to secure their wealth by driving around with a stamp of approval from the gods of fortune.

With the nation's economy creating a prosperous middle class, especially in the Pearl River Delta region, Guangzhou is now getting in on the act.

The Guangzhou Enterprises, Mergers and Acquisitions Service (GEMAS) just held its own licence plate auction last weekend, the first since the previous "number selection payments" scheme was abolished in September 2004 due to controversy.

The auction raised more than 8.2 million yuan (US$1.03 million), said Li Zhengxi, GEMAS general manager.

"People are mostly interested in plates that have the numbers six or eight because they believe these numbers will bring them good fortune."

The highest price paid at the two-day auction was for plate number AW6666, which was bought for 272,000 yuan (US$34,000) by an anonymous bidder on behalf of a motorcycle dealership in Zengcheng, Guangzhou.

Some see social benefits.

A woman surnamed Sun, after buying plate number PC888, said she made the purchase "because I know the money will be used for infrastructure, which is good for society."

Hong Kong auctions, usually held once every two weeks, have been bringing in record returns in recent months, partly because of the region's resurgent economy.

Lucky Lottery Winners Share Secrets
This story began with an e-mail from a viewer who regularly visits the Pennsylvania Lottery Web site. He kept seeing the same people winning big scratch-off prizes over and over again, and he asked Team 4 what was going on, so we decided to check it out.

Verona businessman Jerry Laskoski plays lottery scratch-off games every day.

"How many years have you been doing this?" Parsons asked.
"Probably about the last five or six," Laskoski said.
"How many times have you won $1,000 or more?" Parsons asked.
"Never $1,000 -- $100, $500," Laskoski said.
That puts Laskoski in a class with most daily instant lottery players.
Then, there are those in a class by themselves.

Moon Township real estate manager Joe Tarquinio has hit 13 times for $1,000 or more on scratch-off games in the past three years. He hit twice for $10,000 -- and recently for a quarter-million.

Tarquinio declined Team 4's request for an interview. So did Indiana jewelry store owner Gary Wyant, who has scratched for $1,000 or more 14 times.

Others have been even luckier with the scratch-offs.

Steve Seibert, of McKees Rocks, hit for $1,000 or more 23 times.

Debra Bitler, of Shillington, in eastern Pennsylvania, holds the record with 38 instant lottery wins topping $1,000.

"It looks to me like those 38 wins are pretty remarkable," Carnegie Mellon professor Paul Fischbeck said.
Fischbeck figures out odds for a living. Team 4 asked him and statistics professor Chad Schafer to calculate the odds of what Donna Goeppert did.
Goeppert, of Bethlehem, Pa., played a scratch-off game last year that only had five top prizes of $1 million. Goeppert won two of those $1 million tickets. That's right, two out of the five.

"There were about 7.2 million tickets, and five $1 million winners. If she played 100 times, the odds of her winning two $1 million tickets was about one in 420 million," Fischbeck said.
If you're thinking Goeppert's luck was enhanced because the lottery has a bias favoring the eastern part of the state, think again, lottery director Ed Trees said.
"It's a random seeding of winning tickets through the universe of a game," Trees said.

The New York contractor that manufactures Pennsylvania's instant games makes all the decisions about the big winning tickets, Trees said. Lottery employees have no idea where they are.
"The pack number and winning tickets that may be in there -- there's no association between that, for obvious reasons, so people here have no idea how many winners and what winners are in that pack," Trees said.

West Newton, Westmoreland County, is the luckiest community in this part of the state. Since 2003, four residents there have hit for $100,000 or more on scratch-off tickets. That's one in every 700 people.

The thing is, the winners live in West Newton, but none of them bought their tickets there.
"It's my take that since we haven't sold any of those winners, even though the people are from West Newton, well, it's time we sold one," John Markle said. "So we probably have one in our rack, and you should stop in any day and pick one up, so odds are, we're holding one."

It was one year ago that a young man in New Bethlehem, Clarion County, made headlines by winning $1 million in a scratch-off lottery game. What didn't make the news is how many other times Jamie Hale has won.
"I think it was the fifth ticket I bought, I won $1,000 on it. I figured that was enough for me to play for the day," Hale said. "Next day, I thought, 'I'm still feeling lucky.'"

In one 48-hour period last year, Hale hit for $1,000 four times on scratch-off tickets.
His secret?

"Some days, I'll buy a whole roll," Hale said.
"A whole roll?" Parsons asked.
"Yes," Hale said.
A roll costs $300. And yes, buying a lot of tickets does improve your odds of winning.
But Hale has a few other secrets as well, like buying the last ticket on a roll.
"I'll wait until the end of the rolls on the $10 tickets, and I'll hit for either the $100 winners, I've hit for $250 winners on them, and a couple I hit for $500," Hale said.

Other winners told Team 4 that they'll only buy an even- or odd-numbered ticket.
Some said they'll never buy the first ticket on a roll.
Others claim that if they hit for any amount, they won't play the next ticket in that game.
And virtually all big winners said they check the lottery Web site to see how many top prizes on a game are left.

But don't be fooled by the lucky lottery players, experts say.

"What's not showing here are all the people who bought thousands and thousands of tickets and have very little to show for it, and there are many, many more of them than the person who was lucky in this case," Fischbeck said.

Here's something else you'll need to know if you play the scratch-off games: The Pennsylvania Lottery has changed the numeric code that it used to print on winning tickets.
A winner always had the winning amount placed in parentheses among other numbers. It was a fail-safe way to make sure you didn't toss out a winning ticket.
But the lottery has done away with that code. From now on, you'll have to scratch off the entire ticket to see if you're a winner.

One couple from Gloucester won the Lotto twice
When Derek Ladner next suffers from absent mindedness, he may think twice before cursing his poor memory.

For the 57-year-old's forgetfulness has landed him an amazing double lottery win.

He and his wife Dawn were elated when their six regular numbers came up on the midweek draw.

They were quick to claim their £479,142 share of the £2,395,710 jackpot split between five winners.

But, incredibly, a week later Mr Ladner remembered he had bought another ticket with the same numbers for the same draw.

BULGARIA'S Sports Minister Svilen Neykov has ordered a special review of the national lottery after the same numbers were picked in straight draws.

The probability of this happening is 4.2 million to one, mathematician Mihail Konstantinov commented, although he added that such coincidences can happen.

It’s something that many lottery players ask themselves; can the lotto be won by some lottery strategies or is it completely random? Wide popularity of lotteries and people’s desire to win them have produced numerous systems that aim at reducing lottery odds. Wheeling is perhaps the most popular of all.

Wheeling System is in effect a way of organising lottery ticket numbers. It is designed to help lottery players to improve their chances of winning multiple-tier prizes.

Wheeling is suitable for the players who would like to play with a larger amount of numbers than the set required for a lottery ticket. For example, most of the popular US lotteries would ask a player to put 5 or 6 numbers in the lottery ticket. However, a player might want to play with 7 or more different numbers.

In this case wheeling systems will apply various mathematical formulae to arrange a group of numbers a player selects into various combinations that would give either full or partial coverage of all possible combinations of numbers selected.

One of the popular examples of wheeling is about some Polish-Irish businessman named Stefan Klincewicz who bought up almost all of the 1,947,792 combinations available on the Irish lottery. He and his associates paid less than one million Irish pounds while the jackpot stood at 1.7 million pounds. Ironically however, one of the few combinations he did not cover was a winning one. He still managed to cover three winning tickets, but with the "Match 4" and "Match 5" prizes. Surprisingly though, Klincewicz made a small profit overall.

If 4 of the 6 winning numbers are among the 8 numbers the player wheels, he will have at least one successful combination matching 4 winning numbers.

The main reason behind opting for abbreviated wheel is that it saves money still retaining reasonable chances to win second-tier prizes. As it saves money it creates an opportunity to buy more tickets, pick more numbers, hence, increases chances to win even more.

Key Number Wheel
The main difference between the abbreviated wheel and the key number wheel is that some number, special to a player, will appear in every combination of the wheel. Key number wheel would normally have fewer combinations than abbreviated wheel.

Derren Brown to predict National Lottery numbers live on TV.. before they are drawn

ILLUSIONIST Derren Brown will attempt to correctly predict the lottery numbers live on TV - just minutes before they are drawn.

Brown will put his reputation on the line as he tries to pick the six numbers during a 10-minute special on Wednesday.

The stunt will be broadcast on Channel 4 simultaneously with BBC1's National Lottery Live draw at 10.35pm.

The mind-bending performer promises to reveal his technique to viewers at home - so they too can use it - in an hour-long follow-up show on Friday.

Brown said: "If this one goes wrong,itcouldbea career-breaker."

Wednesday night's jackpot currently stands at £2.4million but Channel 4 have "banned" Brown from buying a ticket.

If Brown succeeds in revealing the correct numbers in advance, it has huge implications for the future of the lottery.

Camelot yesterday said they were "relaxed" about the stunt.

In a statement, they said: "Seventy per cent of adults will be trying to predict the six lucky numbers for Wednesday night's Lotto draw.

"It is impossible to affect the outcome of the draw and Derren Brown is not suggesting he is doing this.

"He is an illusionist creating an illusion that he can predict the numbers. We wish Derren, but more importantly our players, the best of luck."

Nervous One sceptical source predicted that Brown would only reveal the correct numbers after they had been drawn.

But he would make it appear he had beaten the 14million to one odds by getting them right earlier on.

Last night, Brown, 38, said: "I realise there are a lot of questions this brings up, and I hope they'll be answered on the Friday night show.

"For now, I'm really excited and really nervous and cannot tell you for sure how well it will work. Some things just have to be tried."

Couples across New York are taking advantage of Wednesday's once-in-a-lifetime date - 09/09/09 - to tie the knot.

When Justin Allsopp, a 29-year-old child advocate, proposed to Barbara Fitzgerald, she already had the date in mind.

"Nine is my lucky number," Fitzgerald, 28, an attorney, explained.

The two also discovered that the Irish say the luckiest day to get married is Wednesday.

"I did some research and saw that there were two or three days that every culture agrees on as lucky days," said Fitzgerald, who will wed in Sandy Hook, N.J., near her and Allsopp's hometown.

"Nine, nine, nine is just lucky all around!"

The quirk of the calendar, which won't roll around again until September 2109, is considered especially auspicious for Chinese brides because the Mandarin word for "nine" sounds like the word for "long-lasting."

As one bride-to-be, Silin Trenh, 28, explained, "We picked [the date] because the Chinese meaning of the number nine is longevity."

Trenh, an office manager, and her fiancé, Thanh Von, a 31-year-old lab tech, who both split their time between Manhattan and Boston and are both Chinese-American, are planning a small ceremony at City Hall with their close friends and family, followed by a celebration at City Hall Restaurant.

The luck of nine isn't just in the sound of the word.

Nicole Lin and Joe Hill, 40, who both work with antiquities, explained that nine, because it is the highest single digit number, is associated with the Emperor of China and so will add an extra touch of class to their wedding day.

"We struck upon the date of 09-09-09 a little late in the game," said Hill, of Brooklyn, admitting the couple only picked the day about five months ago.

Thankfully, the last-minute wedding will work out.

The two chose to incorporate Lin's heritage - with an updated twist.

Though traditionally, the bride serves the groom's parents, Hill and Lin, who lives in Queens, agreed to serve each other's parents as a sign of unity. "We're serving tea to our elders," Hill said.

Just to add an extra twist to the festivities at their Riverside Church wedding, the bride, who is in her 30s, will walk down the aisle in an antique Edwardian wedding gown sewn in 1909.

Bollywood megastar Akshay Kumar rings in his 42nd birthday on 09.09.09.“Yes, I’m ecstatic,” he told Times of India. Akshay had just flown in to Mumbai after a 60-day schedule overseas. He concedes that 9 is his lucky number and, of course, hopes that life will continue to spring pleasant surprises for him.

Besides being on air currently, in the most talked about television show, the action hero also has two back-to-back film releases lined up. Blue on October 16, and De Dana Dan in November.

His birthday resolution, he says, “Is to take it easy. I don’t wish to do more than two/three films a year. My desire is to spend more time with my wife Twinkle and son Araav. Araav is growing up fast… and I want to be around him whenever I can. It’s great to watch your son grow and do the normal father-son bonding that all dads long for.”

Like many of his superstar colleagues does he dream of owning a cricket team next IPL season? “No,” replies Akshay, “because I don’t have the expertise to treat cricket as a business. I love cricket, I understand the game but I’m not equipped to handle my own team, at least not this coming season.”

Is he superstitious about 9.9.09? “I’m superstitious when I’m told to be, the rest of the time, I walk in a daze… I’m just glad I wasn’t born on 6.6.06, I would have been the devil child or something… Now I’m just the emergency number in England ‘999’.

Is it a good thing? Only my mother knows! If you are in need of help and you live in London just dial ‘me’ and the emergency services will be right with you… ha-ha-ha! But what I love about 9 is that all wonderful things have happened around that number.

Me, my son, my sister and her daughter were all born in the ninth month, my parents’ wedding was in the ninth month, my first house and my last house I bought in the ninth month, all my cars are numbered 9 and I’ve never had a crash off set yet.

It’s a gifted number, but knowing me, I’ll probably get hit by lightning and slashed with a silver streak in my hair and get scarred with a 9 on my forehead on my birthday.

National Lottery reveals lucky number
More people who live at number 3 win the National Lottery than any other address, new figures examining lucky numbers and addresses have revealed.

Residents at the lucky door number have scooped £77,180,678 since the Lottery launched in November 1994.
The second luckiest door number is No2, followed by No5, No6 and No4.
Other door numbers to make the top ten luckiest include: No17, No8, No1, No11 and No18.

The statistics were calculated on the number of Lotto ticketholders winning over £50,000 who had opted for publicity since the launch almost 15 years ago.
For confidentiality reasons, the number of winners at each door number cannot be revealed.

A National Lottery spokesperson said: ''It seems that three really is the magic number, having bagged some massive wins over the years.
''Players up and down the country will now be checking the numbers on their front door as well as their ticket to see if it their lucky day."
It also emerged that for the second year running, the top three postcodes have held on to their rankings as the luckiest 'hotspots'.

Medway Towns (ME) in Kent has consolidated its place as the luckiest postcode in the UK followed by Essex postcodes Ilford (IG) and Romford (RM) in second and third place respectively.
Other postcode areas making the top 10 are: Sunderland (SR), Newcastle (NE), Perth (PH), Teeside (TS), Dartford (DA), Hull (HU) and Bradford (BD).

Sunderland and Perth both boosted their luck ranking in 2007, climbing four spots each to fourth and sixth place respectively.
However, Newcastle, Dartford and Bradford all took a dip in the luck stakes.

Newcastle slipped from fourth to fifth place, Dartford fell three places to eighth and Bradford took the biggest tumble, falling from sixth place to just hold on to its top ten ranking in tenth place.

Both Teesside and Hull retained their rankings - holding on to the seventh and ninth spots.
Since 1994 over 2,300 millionaires have been created by The National Lottery with over £23 billion raised for Good Causes across the country.

A spokesman added: ''With an average of 19 millionaires created in every postcode area in the UK, its clear there are lucky lottery hotspots everywhere.''

Some practitioners are convinced that selling real estate is a numbers game – a lucky numbers game.

Washington D.C.-area Long & Foster associate Juliet Zucker made multiple offers on a condominium on behalf of a client, but none of them were successful. Finally, she wrote an offer that ended in the number “18,” which in Hebrew symbolizes “chai,” which means life. The ploy was successful. Her client signed a contract for $384,118.

When Margaret Rome, a Baltimore-are practitioner, began selling homes 20 years ago, she drove a Porsche 944. In its honor, she ended the price on her first listing with 944. It sold within a week. Since then she has used the number for every property.

Glenn Kelman, CEO of Redfin, says there is truth in picking the right number. Redfin research shows that homes with a list price ending in “500” sell for more than properties whose price ends in three zeroes. They also spend slightly less time on the market.

Why is this? Nobody knows for sure. "You shouldn't sweat the weird stuff, because it will just drive you nuts,” Kelman says.
