Last week saw the 15th anniversary of the National Lottery – which has created 2,300 millionaires since the first draw on November 19 1994 – and surprising new evidence that some numbers are much luckier than others. Statisticians may be puzzled – but superstitious people will not be – to learn that the number 13 has won less often than any other number. Our table shows how frequently each number has appeared in the main Saturday and Wednesday Lotto draws to date. The number that has been drawn the most times over the past 15 years is ball number 38. This has been drawn a total of 256 times – 209 as the main ball and 47 times as the bonus ball. Number 25 is the second luckiest ball to date. So far, it has been drawn a total of 235 times, 196 times as the main ball and 39 times as the bonus ball. Other lucky balls are number 31, number 23 and number nine, which have been drawn 235, 234 and 228 times in total respectively. By contrast, the number 13 has been drawn only 171 times
